An IFS-Informed Approach to Child & Family Therapy
only at Embrace New Life Counseling & Wellness
When children struggle – with anxiety, big emotions, behavioral outbursts, shutdown, or intrusive thoughts – parents often feel caught between two painful questions:
Is something wrong with my child?
Or am I missing something important beneath the behavior?
At Embrace New Life Counseling & Wellness, we approach child therapy with a different starting point:
Children are not broken.
Their nervous systems are protecting them.
What Is IFS-Informed Child Therapy?

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a gentle, evidence-based model that helps children understand their inner world in a way that is non-shaming, non-pathologizing, and empowering.
Rather than labeling behaviors as โbad,โ โdefiant,โ or โattention-seeking,โ IFS teaches children (and parents) that:
Every behavior has a protective purpose
Big feelings come from parts of a child that learned their job early
Beneath fear, anger, or control is a child longing for safety and connection
In child-centered IFS work, we help kids recognize:
โA part of me feels scared.โ
โA part of me gets really loud when I feel overwhelmed.โ
โThereโs also a calm part of me that can help.โ
This simple shift changes everything.
Why This Matters for Children
Children do not yet have adult language, insight, or nervous-system regulation. Traditional talk therapy alone often falls short.
Our IFS-informed approach integrates:
Play
Art
Story
Body awareness
Relational safety
So children can process emotions without being flooded or retraumatized.
We are not asking children to โcontrol themselves better.โ
We are teaching them how to befriend themselves.
What Sets Embrace Apart

1. We Do Not Make the Problem the Enemy
Many approaches unintentionally frame anxiety, OCD, or strong emotions as something to โfight,โ โbeat,โ or โget rid of.โ
At Embrace:
We do not use monster metaphors
We do not teach children to battle themselves
We do not shame protective behaviors
Instead, we help children understand:
โThis part is trying to help me – even if itโs doing it in a really hard way.โ
This reduces fear, shame, and resistance – especially for sensitive, perfectionistic, or highly compliant children.
2. We Teach Self-Leadership, Not Self-Control
IFS helps children discover an inner state that is:
Calm
Curious
Compassionate
Confident
We sometimes call this a childโs โsteady centerโ or โwise helper.โ
When children learn they can access calm inside themselves – with support – they gain:
Emotional resilience
Improved regulation
A stronger sense of identity
Less fear of their own feelings
3. Parents Are Part of the Healing System
Child therapy does not happen in isolation.
We actively support parents in learning:
Parts-based language at home
How to respond to behaviors without escalating
How to co-regulate instead of correcting
How to reduce power struggles and shame cycles
Parents often tell us:
โI finally understand what my child is communicating.โ
And children feel:
โIโm not in trouble for how I feel.โ
4. Developmentally Gentle. Trauma-Informed. Faith-Respectful.
Our work is:
Tailored to developmental level
Informed by trauma science and nervous-system regulation
Respectful of family values and faith, without forcing spiritual language
We meet each child where they are – and honor their pace.
What Parents Often Notice

Over time, parents frequently report:
Fewer emotional explosions
Increased emotional vocabulary
Less fear around anxiety or intrusive thoughts
Greater connection between parent and child
Children who feel seen, not managed
Healing doesnโt mean your child never struggles again.
It means your child knows what to do when they do.
Children Need to Be Understood

If you are reading this, chances are you are a thoughtful parent who senses there is more happening beneath your childโs behavior. You may feel tired of strategies that focus only on stopping symptoms or discouraged by approaches that leave your child feeling labeled or misunderstood.
At Embrace New Life Counseling & Wellness, we believe healing begins when a child feels safe – inside themselves and in relationship with the adults who love them.
You donโt have to figure this out alone.
And your child doesnโt have to carry it alone either.
If youโre wondering whether this approach might be right for your child or your family, we invite you to reach out. We offer a free, no-obligation consultation to help you understand your options and ask real questions – without pressure.
